Members of the Empire State Society's Saratoga Battle Chapter joined with other groups on October 17, 2019
to celebrate the completion of the new Saratoga Surrender Site in Schuylerville, NY.
On this site, overlooking
the Hudson River, on October 17, 1777 British General John Burgoyne surrendered his sword to American General
Horatio Gates following the crushing defeat of the British Army that marked the ‘Turning Point of the American
Revolution’. A relief of John Trumbull's famous painting showing the sword surrender that hangs in the United
States Capital is included on a memorial wall.
The site was developed under the leadership of the Friends of
the Saratoga Battlefield and as a part of the dedication ceremony they transferred ownership to the Saratoga
National Historical Park. The Saratoga Battle Chapter and Empire State Society each donated in excess to $5,000
to this important addition to the Park's holdings.
The Saratoga Battle Chapter membership thanks both the Empire State Society Board of Managers & the Long Island
Chapter, that graciously matched the Society's donation, for their generous financial support of this important
addition to the Saratoga National Historical Park's holdings at the Saratoga Surrender Site. (Photo: Larry J. Arnold)
